Absolute Nintendo - Soccer & Nintendo World Cup on NES

But as I was playing Black Box Soccer, or replaying it, something occurred to me.

I'm not really much of a soccer fan.

Even in gaming, uh, the only standout soccer title I can think of off the top of my head, uh, was probably FIFA International Soccer on the 3DO.

Uh, it was dropping jaws back in the, uh, early-mid '90s, '94, I think.

Uh, but even then, I was probably playing more Soccer Kid [laughs] on the 3DO.

That's a platformer.

That's a great game.

Um, it is actually on Switch.

Um, unfortunately not the 3- 3DO version.

Not a great collection, but anyway, um, that's neither here nor there.

I, I probably already have less interesting things to say about this Black Box game.

Uh, just combined with the fact that it's, it's not all that deep to begin with, I suspect I'm gonna spend more time discussing Nintendo World Cup.

In fact, I know I will, uh, much more.

Uh, but let's just try to get some sense of what, um, this first soccer game was doing.

Uh, first of all, two player.

I have to imagine that's gonna lead to significantly more fun.

Uh, perhaps you have some nice memories of that, but, uh, to prep for this show, I wasn't gonna ask my wife to play a game like this with me.

It's, it's too primitive, too sluggish.

I think those are apt words.

Uh, seven teams to choose from, five skill levels, three half lengths.

Uh, so there are some options, but, you know, even at 15, uh, 15 half, it still feels like it's just about pushing my limit because of the, the player movement.

Again, it's sluggish.

I can't imagine if you up the length to 30 or 45.

Uh, meanwhile, I plan to start at the bottom and work my way up, uh, the difficulty, 'cause I hadn't played this game in forever and a day.

Uh, the first difficulty, pretty darn easy.
