And sure enough, it was only a year away and we didn't know that.

But as time has gone on, I mean, everything that I've been able to do in The area in the city, you know, doing Major League Baseball games like all that is because of my chance that the West Michigan Whitecaps gave me.

So, you know, thinking back to that, you know, there was no Grand Rapids Gold or Grand Rapids Rise or the University of Detroit Mercy or anything like that.

It all started because the Whitecaps happened.

I mean, it's, there's no bigger change since I started to where that broadcast, for example, the West Michigan broadcast is now.

And I mean, I think about when I started and let me say this as a disclaimer, baseball and the radio still have the most special relationship of any professional sport.

I mean, that is, look, it's, Baseball on the radio is like a podcast.

It should be there to inform and to entertain.

It was affecting people right here.

One thing people sometimes forget is that baseball stopped completely.

Major League Baseball postponed games for nearly a week.

The Pirates were supposed to begin a series against the New York Mets on September 11th.

At the time, nobody really knew when baseball would come back or whether it even should.

You could just tell.

You could tell that the country was gearing up for trying to make everything feel secure when really that's impossible.

Baseball finally returned on September 17th, and it returned here in Pittsburgh.

Some are accelerated, some aren't, but if you get caught up in when is it going to happen? Like how, how can I make this happen? You kind of get away from playing the game freely and that's,

Baseball is hard enough as it is, but

the way that you play to your best ability is to play free and to play with joy and to play to have fun.

And so it sounds really cliche, but when you can do those things and just be an athlete on the field, a better side of you comes out.

It'll give us a chance to pause for station identification.

alone brings me back to Ken Griffey Jr.

Baseball.

Like there's just something about like the, they were all like this generic, like boilerplate graphics, but it looks so clean.

And

Maybe it will change with Aaron Judge in the lineup.

Now getting to Shirley Sheldon, he was a right-handed Major League Baseball player.

who won two World Series championships with the Yankees in 1961 and 1962, which were two of the greatest seasons in Yankee history, by the way.

Over his five-season big league career from 1961 to 1966, he pitched for the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, and Boston Red Sox.

But there were other things that happened.

So Mark's part of the story about the players threatening to sit out did occur right before game five.

This wasn't something that happened beforehand, but the players were increasingly anxious that they weren't going to get a bonus that had been semi-promised by something called the National Commission or the Baseball Commission, something like that.

They kept putting off discussions, putting them off, putting them off, putting them off.
