Michael Johnson discusses the Pilates eye chart, motor control, and how his own recovery from a head injury helped him understand how the eyes map motor control, inspiring his signature workshop…
Tracy BelcherHostWell, MatFit Lab is an immersion for you to study how the human mechanism receives sensory input and and how it gets interpreted by the brain for motor output.
And using the Pilates equipment to, what we call in science, centrate the bone so that the bone control is at the center of its house rather than being living at one juxtaposition of the house.
I redefine the nervous system or contrology as a nervous system that is a complete powerful house, not just one region of the body.
So I look at it from a nervous system point of view of sensory input, guess interpretation, motor output, just even in terms of walking.
So a lot of my techniques are prehabilitational techniques that the human mechanism needs before they even get into the strength and conditioning world.
right so it's a prehabilitation kind of like mobility and then the strength and conditioning rooms are like pilates yoga gymnastics so i'm focusing more on the mobility aspects and returning to what i believe joseph pilates is the original mobility master right so taking it back to the word contrology And what I define it as a fascial rehydration system and a proprioceptional highway to the brain.

really, really good ways to describe these things that we have such a hard time in the Pilates world, like putting to words what we're doing.

And you have a really unique way of being able to kind of like dial that down and just say the thing.
So in the MatFit lab, what I do is take people through their own assessments.
their own mobilization, you know, discovering where in that location of the bone is kind of you know, tissues scared, or we talk about restrictive tissue or what's preventing the mobility in that workspace and how to use the tools to say, passively push the bone, like an osteopath into a particular and to feel the body, to push the bone out and how to mobilize that bone, which is really what Joseph Polati was.
this is the kind of the technique, I believe, that comes into the healing aspects or the wellness arts, if you want to call it.
