Every product a company makes has a bill of materials: every part, its cost, its supplier. The company that makes those products has no equivalent document for the work its people do. This weekend…
some weeks the news hands us three things worth your attention this week it handed us one idea worth the whole slot and it is one i've been working on for a while so i'm going to take it slowly by the end of this you will know what a bill of work is why almost nobody has one and how to build one for a single department in about three weeks start with something every manufacturer listening already has a bill of materials for every product a company makes there is a document that lists every part in it, every bolt, every bracket, every circuit board.
A manufacturer who lost that document could not price the product, could not negotiate with a supplier, and could not tell you which parts it was buying 11 of to do one job.
It is how the company knows what it makes now the people who take those apart for a living there is a firm in auburn hills michigan called monroe and associates they buy a competitor's car and take it entirely to pieces every nut and sensor and wiring harness laid out on a bench with a cost against it they sold the report on one well-known electric car for about sixty thousand dollars and they quote their numbers at plus or minus eight percent the industry does not treat that as a guess billions of dollars of supply contracts get argued from a should cost that is plus or minus eight percent there are two kinds of tear down the competitive kind prices your rival's product the other kind points inward you take apart your own cost it from first principles and know what it ought to cost before anyone quotes you now ask for that second document for the work your company does, not the products, the work, every task your people do, what starts it, how long it takes, what it costs, and what is sitting in a queue waiting for it to finish.
Ask your finance director, ask your competitor, ask the consultancy that would like to sell you an agent next quarter.
And the only organizations that do have one are the ones that sell work by the piece.
The first comes from the United States Census Bureau, which surveys about 1.2 million businesses.
Among the companies where workers are working with generative AI, 85% put it to writing and editing.
More than 7,000 annual reports filed with the U.S. securities regulators since January of last year mention artificial intelligence.
Search them for a cost per task, 13 different ways of saying it, and you get nothing.
