In this week’s episode of the *Xtalks Life Science Podcast*, host Dr. Mohammad Ali speaks with Mike McCormick, President and CEO of Nuwellis, about fluid overload, the heart-kidney connection and what…
Mohammad AliHostYou know, it's a little bit of a personal journey for me in cardiorenal syndrome and fluid management.
My, uh, grandfather actually underwent a heart procedure, and following that procedure he had fluid overload, had acute kidney injury event, and gosh, all within the same hospital stay ended up on dialysis.
And then he was on that dialysis journey for three years before he ultimately passed, and I got to see that whole journey.
And, uh, wow, it was an ugly journey, and I knew as a device, uh, side person, there's gotta be better ways to, to manage fluid overload so that a, a surgical trip doesn't end up in such a bad complication.
Gosh, I've been in the medical device industry for 30 years, uh, a lot of it in, uh, different industries, cardiovascular industry, the orthopedic and the spine industry.
And then, uh, now this is the second company in the cardiorenal spectrum, and really it's that personal draw and personal connection for me that, that keeps me very intrigued in this space and finding better solutions for patients.

Even for myself, one of my, um, renal function, um, is very important to me as well.

He was on, uh, dialysis, and then complications arose during kidney transplant, so this is also, like, a very important topic for myself as well, and I think much more work is desperately [chuckles] needed.
