Molly Allaire is not slowing down! The Amherstburg town councillor is running for reelection and excited to keep building on her successes so far. Tying in public service and community work as a busy…
Um, so next question.
What has been possible or positive about being a candidate because you are a woman or even just in your life in general?
So Amherstburg's a very small community, and we have never had a female mayor.
But, um, I think I am one of six female councilors, and we are a very old community.
So the fact that only six women have ever represented our council is actually embarrassing, and I will say all those women stayed on long-term.
So I mean, like, Diane Pouget is retiring this year, and she has been on for 18 years.
My first motion was just to ensure that there was changing tables in both men and female bathrooms throughout our town.
That was literally my first motion at my very first council meeting, but then I got like probably 15 to 20 emails just saying like, "From moms, thank you because it sucks when my husband wants to step up, but he literally can't." So it was eye-opening that like, wow, a female voice is gonna make a huge difference.
Um, I remember like small things, like we wanted to spend, or they did spend 'cause I lost the vote, but they spent $50,000 to regroom a hill in our area, which is great.
However, on the other side of that hill was a mountain bike park that was created by volunteers and so great for our community.
But when you look at it as a whole, as a mother, I was like, "Mm, my kids aren't gonna go down that smooth path.
They're gonna go down that awesome path with jumps and hills." And guess what? That's what exactly happened.
It obviously went through, and then we had to create fencing, and we had to mitigate all those other problems.
