Workplace Wake-Up with Jen Shaw
Oct 21, 2026 · 19 min · 9 segments
Workplace violence usually does not begin with someone announcing an intention to hurt another employee. It may start with angry messages, repeated unwanted contact, escalating personal conflict…
I have been doing training and speaking on this topic since I was in law school because someone I went to law school with was involved in a shooting at 101 California Street in San Francisco, and it was really kind of the first mass workplace violence incident that got a bunch of people's attention.
And ever since then, I've worried about workplace violence and thought about how to prevent it.
And there's a lot going on right now in this area that I wanna make sure you all are very familiar with.
Now, remember that in California, you are required to have a workplace violence prevention program, right? And this is something that is required under the labor code.
But there are a number of components that go into your workplace violence prevention plan.
I'm not gonna talk about those logistics in this webinar because, as you know, we try to keep the webinar to 15 minutes.
But today, I just wanna talk about basic workplace violence prevention because a lot of employers don't know things that they should know, okay? And it's, it's really sad because they just don't understand what needs to be done, okay? So for example, did you know that you can go get a workplace violence restraining order, and you can get it on behalf of your employees? They don't have to participate.
And you can get it to protect people from coming to your workplace or to your parking lot or to your job site, whatever you've got, okay? A lot of employers don't know that.
They don't know that they can go down to the superior court, and they can get a restraining order even if the person involved doesn't wanna participate.
Many, many times when you're dealing with workplace violence, you are dealing with a situation where the employee is very nervous, and they're scared.
They, they make a complaint, but they don't know what's gonna happen because of it, and they're worried, all right? A lot of that is because domestic violence spillover is the number one cause of workplace violence.
