S6 E6: Frank Sinatra, Art Garfunkel, Bobby Brown, Precious, La Roux, Billie Eilish

[singing] And now the end is near.

This is My Way by Frank Sinatra.

It was the 20th of 24 top 20s that Frank Sinatra had all the way back from 1954 and all the way through to 1993.

That actually included one LP, Songs for Singing Lovers, because there wasn't a separate album chart at that time.

Only time an album has ever made the UK Top 20 Singles.

Weird.

And of those 24 top 20s he had, three of them went to number one.

My Way only peaked at five, but it spent 75 weeks on the top 40, April '69 to September 1971.

That was a new record at the time.

And even today, if you look at the singles which have spent the most weeks in the top 40, My Way is still fifth.

It is bettered only by Beautiful Things by Benson Boone at number four.

Then the top three are all Christmas songs, which is kind of what you'd expect.

Last Christmas, Fairytale of New York, and All I Want for Christmas Is You.

However, it was a significantly smaller hit in the USA.

Only peaked at number 27 over there.

We've had some other versions that have charted as well.

Dorothy Squires took it to number 25 in 1970.

A live version by Elvis Presley got to number nine in 1977.

Double A-sided version by Sid Vicious with the Sex Pistols got to number seven in 1978.

Version by Shane MacGowan off of The Pogues got number 29 in 1996.

I also have to mention that Sparks had a minor top 40 hit with a song called When Do I Get to Sing My Way.

Had to get Sparks in there.

And My Way is Frank Sinatra's second most streamed song on Spotify behind Fly Me to the Moon.

I thought you were gonna say New York, New York there.

Surprising, isn't it?
