Ep 12: The Raft

And for today's story, it's 1973, and we have two newlyweds in their late 20s.

Their names are Fitz and Holly, and they are very in love.

They're on their honeymoon.

It's the trip of a lifetime.

They've basically worked a bunch of jobs and saved up money, and now they're backpacking around the world.

Fitz is a poet and a writer.

He's always lived a little bit hand to mouth.

And Holly is more straight laced.

She's a social worker.

She was a good student.

The first time she ever went to Fitz's house, all he had for food was a 50 pound burlap sack of onions that he had bought for a dollar because they were about to go bad.

So they're pretty different.

But she loves his sense of adventure.

He's caring.

He's loyal.

She is gutsy as all get out.

They just love traveling together.

When our story begins, they're in a remote village in Peru, in the jungle, and they have this whole schedule they're trying to keep.

They need to get to a bigger village called Puerto Maldonado so that they can catch a boat to Bolivia so that then they can hitchhike into Brazil.

So then they can be there for Carnival in early March, which is coming up fast.

And if they don't get to Puerto Maldonado in time, they're going to have to wait there for three months for the next commercial boat.

They manage to get tickets on this tiny plane.

It's the only flight out of the village.

It's an army surplus DC-3.

It doesn't even have passenger seats.
