He became the program director and he came to me and he had spent three years living in the tunnels under Vegas.

And he came to me and he said, listen, there's this guy, Matt O'Brien, he wrote this book called Beneath the Neon.

He's been visiting people in the tunnels, developing a relationship, but he's leaving to go teach English in South America, and he wanted to know if, like, we wanted to kind of take over what he was doing.

How perfect! Like, I didn't know that there was people living in the storm drains.

But, like, now we have a way to... something to offer them, other than, like, here's... a granola bar and a bottle of water.

So the theme for Shine a Light has always been just basic human acknowledgement.

And I'm not saying, like, I just go around town and talk to every homeless person I see.

Can I buy you something to eat? But just, like, acknowledging their existence and that they're human just goes so, so far.
