Recorded live at the Wild Summit, Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, sits down with David Oakes to talk about what his "Green Britain" could actually look like. They probe…
So one of the questions I ask everyone who comes on the podcast is, which is something we only end the show with, is if you could go for a walk anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
I'm pausing because I feel I should come up with something much more adventurous, but actually that's a place where I've had so many beautiful memories.
And I also enjoy that it's a space that people use for so many different reasons, whether it's dog walking, running, playing sports, reading a book, or indeed to get into nature.
So I could probably come up with lots of places that I've never been or imagine would be beautiful.
But I also think, and this has been a good reminder, actually, that going to Hampstead Heath is not a hard thing to do.
I mean, Constable is obsessed with the place, so if people are right, then you're onto a winner there.
Do you live nearby? I know all the canal boaty stuff that everybody knows, but is that your home? Is that where you chose to live? No,
I used to live, I've lived in Camden and Kentish Town, so then it was pretty easy.
I lived there on and off for about 20 years, so then I was always close to Hampstead Heath.
Do you think there's enough green spaces around that area? Do you think it's doing okay in terms of tree cover, in terms of parks? London is famously a nice green city to live in.
It could be better for biodiversity, it's good everywhere, but do you think it as a home for you is a suitably nature-rich place?
I think everywhere is going to need more nature, whether that's more tree canopy cover.
