Sean Boyd, Chairman of Agnico Eagle, knows what it takes to build in places most Canadians will never see. From Agnico Eagle’s unusual partnership with National Defence to his belief that governments are now “in the mine-building business,” Sean makes the case for why Canada needs to stop talking about its resource potential and start acting on it.

Mining and Long-Term Thinking0:51 – 2:19

S

0:51

Well, mining, to do it effectively and to do it properly, it's really a long-term business.

S

0:56

So you've got to think long-term.

S

0:58

You've got to be patient.

S

0:59

You've got to have a strategy and stick to it.

S

1:02

But you really got to focus on what you do well.

S

1:05

And I think that goes for countries as well, is that long-term thinking is Don't get too caught up in ideology.

S

1:13

Don't get too caught up in the fads of the moment or short-termism.

S

1:18

Think about the future.

S

1:19

Invest in the future.

S

1:21

But really focus on what you're really good at and where you have a competitive advantage.

S

1:26

And it's pretty clear, as we think about the last 100 years or so in Canada, that mining's played a really important part in creating the great country we have today.

S

1:37

We kind of got away from that for a while.

S

1:40

over the last couple of decades.

S

1:42

And now I think we have the opportunity to get refocused given the conditions in the world and where we see sort of Canada and its positioning.

S

1:51

And we have an opportunity to return to an area where we're extremely good at, which is mining and resource development.

S

1:57

So why not take advantage of not just the resource endowment that we have as a country, but the the experience, the track record, the skill set that exists to take full advantage of that resource endowment and create that wealth for Canadians and specific regions in the country so that we can benefit the entire country with that wealth creation.
