There's part of me that thinks, what if I'd homeschooled him? What if I'd never put him through exams? Because...

I watched my son when exam results came, and obviously a lot of your listeners will have this coming up next week.

And I looked, so I thought, what are the chances of him passing on the resit? And I looked at the resit pass mark and over the last five years, it's averaged 21%.

We've worked this out independently and we gave these statistics to BBC because they asked us to verify it for them.

And so we sent them how we'd worked this statistic out because it's not available on the government website and the Department of Education had no comment on BBC Women's Hour about anything that we said.

Why do you think that is, Hannah, out of curiosity? Well, because I think that there's someone, hopefully, who's going, what are we going to do about this? They found out how much resits cost and that only 21% at best are passing.

So functional skills are offered to children after they have failed their GCSEs.
