On Monday, May 1st, 1995, at about 5:00 in the afternoon, a call came in to the Lothian and Borders Police.
The caller was in Kirkliston, an area 10 miles west of the city of Edinburgh.
Francis Mooney and his teenage sons had been making the most of the bank holiday by hunting rabbits near Craig's Quarry, but their afternoon took a shocking turn when they discovered a man's body.
Francis rushed to a nearby farmhouse to raise the alarm.
Inspector Ian Gregg was one of the first to arrive.
The body of a white man lay exposed to the elements, dressed only in a pair of socks.
Dark red dried blood surrounded what appeared to be a puncture wound on the left side of his chest.
Scanning the lower half of his body, the inspector noticed a second puncture wound on the man's left calf, along with marks around his genital area.
Close to the body, Inspector Gregg found a pair of black trainers with a green comb tucked inside.
A pair of folded stained denim jeans had also been left between some rocks.
A £10 note was clearly visible in the back pocket.
Furthermore, a leather jacket and some underwear were draped over separate branches hanging above the body.
Although his clothes were scattered around the scene, there was nothing to indicate who the man was.
Inspector Gregg relayed his description over the radio, hoping someone would recognize him.
Officers immediately put two and two together, believing it was likely a 35-year-old who had recently been reported missing.
