Sophie Hamilton's twin is missing, and the last trace of her leads to a crumbling Welsh coastal village - known to outsiders as the Death Town. But Sophie is not the only one searching. There's Kai…
If Mabel were a dog, she would bark.
She would come running to the sound of her name being called over and over again in the dying light.
She would help herself to get found.
But Mabel is not a dog.
Mabel is an arsehole.
But still, Kai keeps searching.
His calf muscles are cramped, and his shoulders ache from holding them up with the tension of the day pressed upon them.
But he keeps going, even though daylight has already given up.
He has tracked the ground strategically, searching large square by large square before moving on to the next.
Admittedly, it has become harder since the undulating land has become a woodland.
When he plots his next piece of ground through the spindly branches of the woods around him, he makes out a cabin in the distance, quaint, like an old wooden church from back in the day.
Its lights are on, cast in a warm glow in the darkening afternoon.
Kai decides this is his last port of call before giving up on the search to start anew by first morning light.
"'There once was a cat called Mabel,' he sings quietly to himself as he rambles along a well-worn forestry track towards the cabin, "'whose manners were a little unstable.
She liked to bring rats because she's a bit of a twat under the kitchen table.' If Mabel were here, she'd roll her feline eyes.
If Claudia were here, she'd laugh that light tinkle of a bell sound, because that was her little ditty, not Kai's.
Kai doesn't either, because he's thinking of the first time Claudia sang that song.
It was the first night in their swanky new apartment on the outskirts of the Big Smoke.
Mabel showed her disdain by bringing in a small mouse, while Kai and Claudia sat at the table littered with takeaway containers, surrounded by unpacked boxes, and clinked their glasses of ryoka together in dewy-eyed celebration.
Kai had chosen the apartment.
If it were Claudia's choice, they would have bought something akin to the cabin ahead of him, sitting quietly by itself in the woods, or the house he now lives in, back in the Oxfordshire countryside.
A token gesture, far too late.
And if Kai hadn't have been so ambitious back then, perhaps they wouldn't have moved into the city's sleek apartment block with a brand new 5G tower erected on the roof.
Kai knows not everyone gets affected by EMF the same way as Claudia did.
Not everybody's cells get so agitated it causes leukaemia.
