In 2025, Coeur d'Alene High's Wyatt Carr stepped into a new role. The team's longtime leaders had graduated, and the responsibility of carrying one of the nation's premier distance programs now rested…
Wyatt CarrGuestNicholasHostWhat do you think is the biggest mistake that people make with summer training?

Yeah, I think the biggest mistake people probably make is getting away from the basics in the summer.

Actually, you can really focus on what you need to focus on, like recovery, sleep, food, and then training itself without having a bunch of distractions.

But ultimately, it's about base building because you're not trying to be your best in September.

So if it's too hard early on, then you can start to not see the results you want at the end of the season.
We were talking off the air about threshold and stuff.
Talk about maybe just a little bit more what you guys at Coeur d'Alene emphasized over the summer going into the fall.

Yeah, we certainly were all focused on threshold throughout the upcoming weeks here.

We've backed off our paces a little bit, I would say, from our traditional sustained tempos.

We want to make sure that we're getting the right effort in, and it's just a way to make sure that we do that.

You know, there's, I don't exactly know the science to it, but I got a lot of trust in both my coaches and they got us dialed in.
Do you test lactate or no?

We look at heart rate a little bit just to make sure we're staying within, we try to stay within about, I want to say, 82 to 89% of our max.
