The Smarter Generosity Podcast

What does it really mean to leave a good inheritance? For believers, inheritance is about more than passing down money or material possessions—it’s about preparing the next generation to become…
Now, families often spend a lot of time thinking about what they'll leave to the next generation.
But how does a believer think about the concept of inheritance and how do we prepare our children and grandchildren for what we pass along to them?
And there's probably nothing in our work with partners at Crew that we see more often that people are pondering is, how do I get this to take with my children and not just them, but my grandchildren? And we all get so uncomfortable when we see it not done well or we see, you know, the children or the grandchildren going off the rails.
So everybody can think of an incident where they know of somebody, if not in their own family, they know people where it didn't go well.
So asking the question, what can I do practically? What's the framework? What are the practices, the habits? What's the mindset that I need to have to try to be successful in following the Lord on this one?
I would say in our country right now, we're thinking mostly, when we think inheritance, we think the first generation, right? So our default here is going to be, okay, it's going to go to the kids divided equally.
And even if we don't say that explicitly, I feel like to our kids, that's sort of an expectation that our culture has set us.
And even if you think multi-generationally, you're thinking, well, that just means I've got to have a bigger sandpile because it's got to last,
And Katie, it's shocking the statistics that are out there that massive amounts of wealth that are left, the vast majority of times do not make it past the first generation.
The third, by the third generation, there might be wealth, but there's huge dysfunction.
There's huge spiritual, there's a lot of spiritual unhealthiness, bad relationships, poor work ethic.
But the idea of equity and fairness, that's really built into a lot of the questions that we hear as well.
