Fear has a way of showing up when we least expect it. In First Light Ep. 47, Chuck talks about some recent moments that brought new fears into his life and forced him to look at fear, suffering…
But let me tell you a different story this morning.
The one that came to mind happened when my son Spence was in the fifth grade.
I start out by telling you that I don't naturally get up being afraid.
Being afraid of things is just not part of my normal behavior.
personality.
And I don't see myself as being a brave person.
I do like that image, but I don't get up thinking, you know, I'm just going to try to be brave today.
I just don't deal with fear very often.
And, uh, I'll tell this really quick story.
We were driving early one morning, my youngest son and I were driving early one morning to go meet Spence at a place in, um, In near Fayette County, a long time ago, before Spence lived out there, we were invited to go turkey hunting at a friend's house.
And so it was about 3.30 in the morning and we were driving down one of these little small country roads right out here where we live.
And I saw a little flame.
It looked like a fire out in the distance.
And when we got closer, I realized it was a car turned upside down.
And from a distance, I could see blonde hair hanging upside down and this car was on fire.
And the car was upside down in the middle of the road.
And we were not going to be able to pass that car to go where we needed to go.
And as I got closer, I realized there was a human hanging upside down by a seatbelt in a car that was literally burning on fire in the road.
The wreck couldn't have just started.
So, of course, I did the most logical thing anybody would do in that moment.
I stopped the car.
I told my youngest son to call 911.
And I ran toward that car.
middle of the dark in the road and got on my back and slid inside that car.
And there was a young girl in there just barely dressed.
