Career reinvention is rarely neat, and it often starts with a quiet question you cannot unhear. In this episode, I’m joined by Joanna Wong, host of the podcast Chasing Waves, to talk about career…

Damien Van BrunschotHostIs it fair to say then, Joanna, when I summarise your corporate career and where it took you, was it hard for you to let go of, if you like, the golden handcuffs? Or you got to a point where you realised that you needed to do something more creative and more? Where did you land on that and why the transition?

It was so hard because I think maybe it's the New York hustle in me, but I kept going after the next big job and the next big shiny brand.

And that was my ethos, my identity, right? 20 years trying to get everything in.

And then I realized actually, It's been amazing and this is what I've always done, but is this actually still something that I want to do? And that's really interesting.

And then also realize that actually we're evolving as people, as humans and say, maybe there's something else out there that I'm more passionate about.
It's interesting you should say that one of the things I picked up on your work, and this is where I was, was basically, I'm a bit older than you, it's fair to say, but I was a partner in a law firm and I merged a law firm with an international brand.
And then effectively I got to a point where I thought, I'm really just playing a very defensive game.
You know, you get to a point and you become senior in a certain position where it feels as though you're kind of just playing defense all the time.
And for me, I needed something that represented some creativity and some growth and a new opportunity.
