And today we're going to talk about something that's going to make people uncomfortable.
Because sometimes the conversations that make us uncomfortable are the conversations we need to have the most.
Today we're discussing mothers who drink alcohol or use alcohol during their pregnancy.
We're talking about babies who enter this world facing medical complications, developmental challenges or disabilities that may follow them for the rest of their lives.
And then we're going to ask a question that some people do not want to touch, I'm sure.
If a woman knowingly puts her unborn child's health at risk through substance use, should she be held criminally responsible? Should she go to jail? Should she be required to enter treatment? Should the child be taken away? Because clearly you're showing before the child is even here that you may not be that child's best choice for a guardian.
Or are we looking at a situation where punishment might actually make things worse? Now, I want to establish something before we go any further.
I think there are amazing mothers that are in a very healthy two-parent home relationship and treat their child great.
So that kind of seems to be a string of just bad choices when they're bad to an adopted child when the child already didn't have their first parent.
And if you don't like them, too bad, because they're in my head and I'm just speaking out loud, which I'm allowed to do.
To say that we're not going to humiliate mothers who are fighting addiction because addiction is addiction.
