Is your deck holding you back—or is it how you’re playing it? Logan from CriticalEDH joins Craig Mack to talk cEDH strategy, threat assessment, better practice, and turning tournament experience into…
Th- there's players that get pulled to cEDH just because they, they see this, they love it, and they, they want to be good at it, right? And it just kind of pulls them that way.
You know, I love casual, and I never slight anybody that, you know, their formats they like, but there feels like there's a limit to it, right? Like, if you get too good at casual, if you're crushing a casual table, it's always you're playing too good of cards.
So I think there's always an, an off-ramp for casual players, the, the ones that wanna go to cEDH, and it's like a natural off-ramp, right? And it should happen because there should be casual pods where people are just sitting around playing, you know, rat decks or ooze decks or whatever the heck they wanna play.
For me, coming from 60 card Magic, when I really sat down and started playing cEDH, I was like, "Wow, this is what I always wanted." And it was mainly because it is so much more complicated.
And I just feel like if the more people see it, the more people that actually give it a chance and play the game and play the format, it'll convert tons of 60 card grinders into this format.
It's very easy to hate on cEDH online, but I think if we, uh, just show the format more, show the good side of the format more, more people are going to port over, and, uh, that's what I look forward to.
Yeah.
I, I totally agree.
I think one, one perspective that I have that many Magic players don't have is that for me, cEDH is, yeah, it's a separate format, but it might as well be a separate game entirely.
You have the systems of Magic that you rely on, but there's just so many factors that aren't a part of cEDH that are a part of 60 card that...
Or, or, you know, vice versa as well.
But, um, for me it's, it's very hard to relate things from cEDH to 60 card because it, if you look at some of the judge rules, for example, they're like, "Well, this is the way that this applies in 60 card." And I've said, "That doesn't apply at all to our format.
So why are we using that as a jumping-off point? Like, can't we just establish something new?" Or, um, just certain play patterns and things like that too.
Things that we do in cEDH often are illogical because in 1v1 it just doesn't make any sense.
And we all know this because when we practice our cEDH decks against another player and we don't have a four pod, we're just, like, playing 1v1, we're like, "Oh, wow, this is just totally different.
It doesn't feel the same."
Yeah.
