"I'm gonna push you, or I'm gonna drag you. Either way, we're getting there." The Athlete Coach Conversation No One Talks About has Matt and Ant pulling back the curtain on the actual mechanics of…
your-I th- yeah, I think the, the most important thing to line up with on a coach is expectation management.
Mm-hmm.
And that is when you've...
I think a lot of people go into coaching consults or, like, book a call with a coach or whatever it might be, and they've basically already decided if they're gonna sign up, where rather than doing, like, an interview process and being like, "Cool, I'm gonna talk to 10 different coaches and see who I vibe with."
Mm-hmm.
Um, 'cause it's one thing for a coach to be able to get you to your goal, whether that is a time goal or to finish a race for the first time or whatever it might be.
Um, it's... there's gotta be a, a personality blend.
Mm-hmm.
You've gotta get on with that person.
You gotta be able to talk to that person every day.
You've gotta be able to, like, have a joke with them.
They, they've gotta be able to talk to them when things are hard.
And I think that also sits on a scale, like, the more goal-oriented you are, I think the more you're willing to sacrifice that personality-
Uh-huh
... to get a strict outcome.
Yeah.
So I'd be w- if there was a coach who could go, "Matt, I 100% guarantee you'll go under 10 hours in Boston at the end of the year, but I'm an absolute cunt," I'd be like, "Don't care."
[chuckles] Brilliant.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Get me there.
Perfect.
Like-
Yeah, yeah.
Call me a fuckwit every day of the week, don't care.
