You can't make your race much better during taper — but you can make it a hell of a lot worse. Two weeks out from Sydney Marathon, Matt and Ant break down the taper: why the fatigue hits like a tidal…
Matt ButlerHostAnthonyHostSo the reel that you would have seen on my socials was actually a really, it was a fun reel.
It was the one where I spoke about my next race.
I included a load of memes and stuff like that just to make a talking head reel not seem so boring and stuff like that.
But I actually filmed another speech, if you want to call it that, before that, just in regards to kind of like my next race, what I had lined up, but also why I hadn't raced in so long as well and stuff like that.
And the way that I filmed the reel, I kind of, Where we're coaches, we have like a certain element of like, not professionalism, or we have professionalism for definite, but kind of like a way that we have to present ourselves in terms of the way we talk about training and endurance and coaching and stuff like that.
When I spoke to The Real, I was basically like, I'm just fucked.
Like, I'm just tired.
point of view like my i'm on a tether with like small things small things just kind of can like send me over the edge and stuff like that and i haven't raced since new zealand because i've just been so busy and as we said like the last two months we've been busy but you don't actually realize burnout until you're kind of at the point where you're like shit, like I've just reflected on the last six months.
But like after New Zealand, during New Zealand prep, Ironman New Zealand, I already had 15 to 20 athletes, I think it was.
I now have 35 plus athletes whilst managing my nine to five, whilst trying to hold down a very, very amateur triathlon career.
And one of those things just had to go.
And it was, my mental structure with training.
So everything's just been kind of like fun going for runs because I wanted to run and go for rides because I want to try a new coffee shop and a croissant and get out in the countryside and stuff like that.
So the next race that I've booked is the barrel classic.
It's the 120 K. ride and honestly the purpose behind it is because i've had some semi-formal i've been on the bike quite a bit recently and i've i've improved i've seen kind of like how i've been improving so i want to put that into practice but to be honest I just want to do it for the last two years leading into New Zealand.
I was racing and building to something.
This race is just because I just want to do something fun.
Just want to go for a
Yeah.
I want to go for a ride.
I said it in the reel.
I was like, I want to go for a ride with no cars on the road and have a nice coffee and a cross run afterwards.
