Treasury says every eligible kid under eighteen with a Social Security number has one now.

But the one thousand dollars that Trump promised in the law he signed on July fourth, twenty twenty-five says who actually gets it, which is a child born after December thirty-one, two thousand twenty-four, or before January first, twenty twenty-nine.

So if your kid was born in twenty twenty-four or any year before that, like yesterday, they have an account with their name on it, and Trump's money is zero.

In twenty twenty-one, which you might remember, the government expanded the child tax credit and paid half of it out in advance.

The Census Bureau's count for child poverty that year, the one that counts tax credits as income, said it was five point two percent.

And then we let the credit expire, and the next year it was twelve point four percent, more than doubled, and that is from the Census Bureau.

Rosa DeLauro introduced it back in twenty twenty-five with more than one hundred and ninety co-sponsors, but of course, it's sat in committee ever since.
