Today we are talking about something that can easily be missed or overlooked by mental health providers.

I'm talking about the connection between sexual abuse or assault and the pelvic floor.

We will be talking about pain during sex, pelvic pain with no explanation, the person who cannot get through an exam with a gynecologist, the person who clenches and braces without knowing why.

I work with survivors of sexual abuse often, and for these clients, I pull out all the big guns, EMDR, polyvagal theory, internal family systems, and other evidence-based trauma treatments.

And even then, some of my clients still struggle because the damage from sexual abuse is not only emotional, it is very much physical as well.

It shows up as vaginismus, erectile dysfunction, bladder urgency and chronic tension.

She's also the director of clinical success at Mendwell Health, where she and her team work with all bodies, all genders, and their approach is trauma-informed from the ground up.

I've connected some of my clients with pelvic health specialists and saw them finally get relief from things they were told to just live with.

Healing from sexual abuse honestly takes a wraparound team and today's topic is one of the crucial pieces we need to help clients find healing.

This podcast contains content that may not be suitable for children and that may be triggering for some individuals.

That said, I want to encourage people with sexual trauma to not just dismiss the episode out of the gate.
