1 Corinthians 11:1 says, "Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ." So Paul isn't saying, "Just listen to my teachings.
Listen to what I do, and if you do that, if you follow me, you'll grow closer to Christ." I mean, that's, that's pretty, a challenging statement.
Uh, if you look at my life, what is it speaking? Is it speaking, um, that I'm cranky? Is it speaking that I'm harsh, that I'm gossiping? You know, there's nothing worse than if you say that you're a Christian and your life is, is preaching one thing, but it's expressing another, like a mean, cranky Christian or a judgmental Christian, uh, that's not, that's not releasing love.
No, Paul is saying, "As I, as I live, so is He." And, and so asking ourselves the question as we're living daily, is He flowing from us? You know, uh, what are the people who are watching you, who are closest to you, what do, what does that say about your legacy? What do your children say about how you respond to hardship or difficult things in your life? What do your coworkers see, uh, when, when maybe something's stressful at work, how you're responding? All of these things are leaving a legacy.
In fact, we were just having a family devotion the other night, and this conversation came up.
We were, uh, reading out of the Book of Galatians, and we opened it up for conversation with our children, and one of our kids said this.
They s- uh, "I feel like God's calling us to be more like Him, just even by being nice to people, loving people around us, being outgoing, asking how, uh, their day's going, meet- meeting their needs instead of being consumed by our own needs." She said, "I feel like I'm a representation of Christ." And, and she even said this.
She said, "I feel like I'm representing my parents, who are pastors, in a way that is glorifying God by loving people, by, by reaching out, by being kind." I mean, let's go back to the basics of Christianity, of just being a nice human being, just being a kind human being.
It's always challenged me if I'm out in public and maybe I'm cranky, maybe a, a, a lady at the checkout line's taking longer than I want her to take, and me, as a Christian, I'm getting cranky.
You know, I'm making faces and huffing, where someone else alongside of me, maybe they're a Christian but maybe not, uh, they're, they're being gracious.
It always challenges me to say, "Wow, if people would look at the two of us, which one of us would they say, uh, is carrying the expression of Jesus in the Earth?" And so not that you have to be perfect all the time, but it's saying, "God, how can I be more like you? How can I allow what you've done in my life to be released into the lives of others?" And Paul said this.
He said, "Watch me As you see me go through life you're going to see Christ glorified.
And as we were having this conversation with our kids uh, they were saying even how people see us handle a- offense, even when we're talking to our friends, how we're giving them wisdom, but that wisdom is coming from God's word.
And, um, th- my daughter went on and she said, "Mom and Dad, like, we've watched you guys walk through challenging seasons.
