Bathsheba

Now, some people will speak in ignorance the following line of rubbish.

Don't you believe in grace? Look at the grace God showed to King David when he repented after the sin with Beersheba.

Oh, boy.

First of all, that is the old covenant, not the new.

But there's four women listed, and out of the four, three of them were ungodly women, like, uh, like Tamar right here.

Bathsheba was another one that was mentioned.

Rahab was another one that was mentioned.

She was actually the grandmother of David, and, uh, she was a harlot.

And then Ruth married Boaz, and, um, then Boaz produced Obed, and Obed produced Jesse, and Jesse produced David, and then David produced Solomon.

That's in verse six.

And it says, uh, "of her that had been the wife of Urias." That's referring to Bathsheba.

And of course, 2 Samuel chapter 11 and 12 talk about the sin of David with Bathsheba, and then he killed her husband, Uriah.

Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.

So David sent and inquired about the woman and someone, I would like to know who that someone is, someone said, isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? Asking a question, hoping and desiring that the king would recognize who this is and would turn away from what his intent may be.

But David sent messengers and took her.

She came to him and he lay with her for she was cleansed from her impurity and she returned to her house and the woman conceived.

Some of you have margins and in the margins of your Bible, it will say that David's message back or through the messenger back to Joab was, do not let this appear evil in your eyes.

The last verse of the chapter says, Makes a point.

Speaking of Bathsheba, when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house and she became his wife and bore him a son.

But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord or the thing that David has done was evil in the eyes or in the sight of the Lord.

a flawed man, but a man after God's own heart.

And I often ask myself, you know, was this Bathsheba incident, a guy after God's own heart? It's like, no, even though he went through that incident and he knew he was wrong, um, he still stopped to pray.

He fasted.

He, um, you know, in Psalms 139, uh, 23 to 24, David invites God to search his heart, expose anxious and harmful ways and lead him in the everlasting way.

We do something for the incoming sixth graders as they're leaving fifth grade.

And we went to the site and sound theater and watch the play David and And so today we're going to be talking about Bathsheba and Delilah and the funny thing is so usually we're both talking on both but I was like hey let's each do one and you chose Bathsheba and I'm doing Delilah but I'm sitting there in the theater and I'm just watching this story unfold with Bathsheba and I'm like.

This is so different than I thought.

So on the drive back, I started researching things too about Bathsheba because I was like, do I have everything wrong? I don't know.

So yeah, it was crazy just how that aligned.

But we were talking before the podcast how every single woman that we dive into in the Bible, it's like we're doing a Bible study that mentions them or something in life correlates to it.

So it's not that we have all new things all the time, but God just keeps...

And here's an interesting thing.

He's also Bathsheba's grandfather.

You remember Bathsheba? He remembers what happened years and years and years ago What could have made this man who was once loyal to David turn traitor in favor of his son? Maybe it was that.

But Ahithophel was the dagger to David's heart.

Because I confided in that guy.

identified as a Hittite.

But the more I looked at his character, the more I looked at the details, the few details we have of his person in the narrative, in the Bathsheba narrative, I would not consider Uriah a mercenary, at least anymore.

Like I said before, this is a category that people could move out of.

A soldier could go from being a mercenary at one point to no longer being a mercenary based on changes of details.

For example, acquiring land in the nation for which they're fighting.

In the story, it appears clear that Uriah has a wife, Bathsheba.

He has land.

He has a home in Jerusalem.

So Jeremiah is calling out Jehoiakim and the people and the leaders about their sin and now how does Jehoiakim respond when Jeremiah calls him out well not well in fact the Bible teaches in Jeremiah chapter 26 that Jehoiakim is so upset with with men of God, so upset with the word of God that he actually is hunting down the prophets of God to have them killed.

There was one particular man, you can actually hear all about this if you want to just go back to my episodes in Jeremiah chapter 26, and there was that man named Uriah, who, not the same Uriah that you're thinking about with Bathsheba, but a man by the name of Uriah who actually escaped And Jehoiakim sent his guards down to get him, brought him back and executed him.

I mean, that's just how vicious this man was.

In fact, he wanted also to get Jeremiah.
