I want to start out by first, we have to understand what serum iron levels are and what they tell us, okay? So serum, as in like, you know, we go and get labs, we draw your blood.

If we just check serum iron, that more or less just tells us what amount of iron is circulating systemically over the last few hours.

We need a little more data to tell us the whole truth, right? There are things like total iron binding capacity or TIBC and transferrin saturation.

And those can tell us, you know, more or less, it's almost like how many, if we think of iron like a fleet of trucks, right? How many fleets of trucks do we have and how full are the trucks, right? Okay, so a little more useful, I think, but it's kind of late in one sense, right? We need to find a marker that is early to the punch.

Hemoglobin and hematocrit, That can tell us kind of like what is the finished product.

But again, by the time these two drop, the iron deficiency has been probably running for like months, sometimes even years.

So again, all of these can be useful markers when we're talking about iron deficiency markers.

I believe that ferritin is the most useful and, frankly, one of the most sensitive markers.
