Aug 23, 2026 · 34 min · 8 segments
My friend and Arsenal fan Cathal sent me a voice message with his post-match reaction, and in this episode I take his message apart and explore some of the useful football vocabulary, expressions and…
The Premier League is here.
We have had the opening game between the reigning champions, between the current holders, Arsenal FC, of course, and also Coventry City, the newly promoted club.
And, uh, of course, this was an interesting game, and you could say it was a bit of a walk in the park for Arsenal, an easy game to get us off the mark, to get us started.
I'm really, you know, over the moon, uh, with this, uh, victory.
But also, um, I have to say that, um, I do have a mate.
His name is Cathal.
He is, uh, from Ireland, and I like to talk to him about Arsenal, and he has been on this podcast many times before.
Do you guys remember Cathal from Ireland? Well, I wanted to talk to him again about this opening game.
Unfortunately, though, we couldn't make it happen, but instead, he decided to send me a voice message, which is equally wonderful.
So, uh, there is a voice message from Cathal.
It's about seven to eight minutes long, and what's gonna happen now is that I will play this to you and, um, it's a voice message, so those of you who are watching this as a video, then, uh, the following seven to eight minutes will have to be just a static image of, of, um, I don't know what.
We will decide in post-production, okay? Anyway, the point is, it's about listening, right? You won't be using your eyes.
You will be listening this time.
So, um, I would like you to listen out for any interesting language and, um, when this is over, when this message is finished, uh, we will become, when I say we, I mean I, Zdenek, will become a geeky, nerdy teacher because I will take a look at the language.
I will pick it apart.
I will analyze it as a- any good English teacher would do, and hopefully, uh, by breaking it down to you, I will manage to teach you some interesting vocabulary from the episode or at least, at least, um, raise awareness of this language.
As usual, I think this language is not only useful when talking about football, but I think you can use it in your daily life.
Often any language that appears in the football world, whe- whether you're listening to a podcast about football, a fan channel, or a, a, a commentary, a football commentary, often the language they use there is something applicable to life outside football.
So, what I would like you to do is pay close attention and, yeah, just enjoy this wonderful message from Cathal.
Thank you very much, Cathal, by the way.
Thanks for sending it in.
