Most of us think it was a place where it was just the sale of goods, uh, that occurred.
It was also a place of trading animals like sheep and goats and doves and cattle.
Within the temple in Jerusalem, animals were approved for sacrifice and were sold to pilgrims.
Why? Well, people would travel from far away, right? And they're coming to worship God in the temple, and they couldn't bring their animals.
Uh, the reason why is because the animals-- It was such a far journey that the animals would get sick and they would die, and, and they wouldn't have anything to sacrifice.
And, and money changers were there because people would need to convert regional coins into what's called the Tyrian shekel, which was made out of silver and was ritually acceptable.
And why was it acceptable? Because these other coins had images of emperors and gods, and this was a violation, uh, uh, prohibiting, uh, something, you know, they, of the graven image.
Then there was business negotiations and contracts between merchants and customers.
And then politics, of course, right? Were, were conducted in the marketplace with kings and governors and, and town officials made, uh, proclamations where people gathered.
And then there was the social int- interaction, no? Friends met there, and kids played, and travelers shared the news, and laborers waited, uh, to be hired.
There was the Court of the Gentiles, the Court of the Women, the Court of Israel, and the Court of the Priests, the holy place, the Holies of Holies.
