Preaching Through The Ten Commandments, The 6th Commandment Pt. 1

Okay, you want to explain what that means? Yeah, I think teaching and preaching this commandment, that is key to one of the things you have to do is you have to distinguish.

It's not saying all types of killing is wrong.

There are provisions even in the book of Exodus for self-defense.

Obviously, there's commands about going to war and those kinds of things.

And so it's not all killing, but it's a...

And now it can cover negligent homicide or, you know, those kinds of things.

And so he does, or God does flush out some of this in the case law on like specific scenarios, but like the intentional taking of a life, you know, that's not self-defense or, or, or capital, you know, capital execution.

Negligent taking of life because of your own.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

If you, if you do something accidentally and it, and it, somebody ends up dying, there's, I mean, lesser penalties for that, but there are degrees just like in our, our law system as well.

Aaron, you preach this as a series, like one commandment per sermon.

When you got here, kind of in the vein of what John's talking about, how are you explaining what does this commandment mean? Any specific issues that kind of went along with it?

Yeah, so I preached the Ten Commandments as ten messages, but interestingly enough, the sixth one I actually did in two because it seemed like there were so many culturally relevant things connections with war, like just war theory, different issues like that, abortion.

So I took a whole Sunday and just talked about those side issues.

So it's almost like I laid the theological foundation for the discussion and then talked about those issues the next week.

And that was the only one I did that with for some reason.

Um, but yeah, I, I tried to, uh, delineate between killing, which some versions use, which is probably unhelpful because it's too broad of a term.

Um, and defining murder as the intentional or deliberate taking of another person's life, um, which narrows it down a little bit more.

So rooted in, um, we were created in the image of God and you're taking that and destroying it.

Um, jumping to like genesis 9 and uh after noah and the flood you see that he says whoever sheds the blood of man by man shall his blood be shed for god made us in his own image and so he roots like killing being in opposition to being created in the image of god so that's kind of how i started it and led into the discussion

Yeah, such a heinous thing.

John, in some of the things he touched on, how did you sort of break this down, both with kind of obviously explanation, but then at least the different implications that can come from this commandment?

Yeah, I mean, I spent quite a bit of time in the Sermon on the Mount and in James 4.
