There is an opinion I have which I am open to anyone questioning but I believe women in industry create stronger connections than men. Why does this matter for this podcast? Well Peter Wallbank - Founder and UK Sales Manager of August Race is my guest but without Sarah Wallbank - Founder, CEO, Export Director it wouldn’t have happened. Sarah and I met at METSTRADE years ago and because of that connection when her husband Peter was due to travel out to Australia she contacted me to arrange the interview. Sarah is a formidable contributor to our industry and she will absolutely be on my podcast one day but until then you can at least enjoy the dulcet tones of her partner in both life and business Peter.
So what do he and I discuss?? Well quite a few things actually from cleaning products to boating myths, to Autism and ADHD!
But let’s start with….
What goes into the products we use to clean our boats—and what happens when they reach our waterways? Peter Wallbank of August Race joins me, Nicky Vaux, on The Boat Princess Podcast to talk boat care, marine cleaning products, environmental impact and the realities of running a family business.
Whether you’re a boat owner, a passionate yachtie or working in the boating industry, this conversation will give you plenty to think about, both on and off the water.
We explore the reasoning behind August Race’s products, the problems they’re designed to solve and why the environmental impact of boat cleaning and maintenance deserves our attention. How can we take care of the boats we love while being more mindful of the waterways we enjoy?
Behind the business is a family, too. Peter and I discuss the juggle of building a marine industry brand alongside family life, and the personal experiences that shape his approach to business.
Our conversation also explores “high-performance ADHD”, how ADHD relates to Peter’s own life, and why attitudes towards ADHD and autism need to change (that’s me more than him pushing that point because I believe it’s an advantage in life not a disadvantage - Kay Cottee said in her interviews (see Episodes 1, 5 and 10) - because of her ADHD she usually has 30 projects on the go at any one time and although she may only complete 20 that’s still way above the average! We talk about looking beyond labels, recognising different ways of thinking and making room for strengths as well as challenges.
And make sure you listen right to the end! I put Peter on the spot with some fun questions about boating habits and myths—and I know you’ll enjoy his answers! ⚓️
