Weird and Wonderful: The Wonderful world of birth and motherhood

A doula is a person who takes care of pregnant women through pregnancy, labor and birth.

Okay.

And we also have postpartum doulas.

So there are people who do both and there are people who specialize.

So others specialize in labor and birth specifically and others specialize in postpartum care.

My speciality is I've added maternal mental health into it because of the need for helping women transition into motherhood.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So a doula is a midwife? A doula is not a midwife.

No?

So a doula, what we help with is information, advocacy, like we help the women know how to advocate for themselves because they're active participants in their own health care.

And so we're like a birthing coach as well.

So we're trained to understand birth, labor and birth.

But we can't do medical interventions.

Right.

So I cannot check my client, for example, who are two centimeters dilated.

I cannot give them medical advice.

But I do have an understanding of the medical world pertaining to pregnant women.

So it's a coach.
