Tech Gets Real: Protect Yourself in the AI Era

Anthropic has not given UK and European AI officials access to Mythos 5.1, its latest powerful model, seemingly because the Trump administration won’t allow it. There’s no easy explanation for this…
And the question is, how come AI experts in Europe and other parts of the world outside the US are not being allowed access to Anthropic's latest, most powerful model? Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that the UK's AI Security Institute has not been granted access to Mythos 5.1, the latest version of Anthropic's most powerful model.
It had been able to evaluate the previous version of Mythos, and so we had independent verification that, yes, Mythos is very, very capable on the cyber front, both in terms of finding vulnerabilities and potentially exploiting them.
In fact, the Brits were the only non-Americans who were allowed this kind of access.
But this time round, it seems that with the release of Mythos 5.1 at the beginning of this month, access is for Americans only.
One UK government insider told the Financial Times, national security officials have concerns.
They're worried that this could be a sign of things to come with the AISI not being given access to the latest models.
Of course, here in the European Union, we are used to this kind of treatment, and it seems the Brits are in for it now too.
Anthropic made that promise at the beginning of June, and we are, of course, now approaching the middle of September.
Earlier this week, after the FT article came out, I got in touch with the European Commission and ENISA, the European Cyber Security Agency, to ask them what is going on from their side.
As regards Mythos 5.1, the actual state-of-the-art one that we would all like to know about, really, thank you very much...
No discussions on access to Mythos 5.1 have been held so far, Enisa's spokeswoman told me.
I've just got an email from the UK Cabinet Office, which has responsibility for the AI Security Institute in that country.
These risks do not stop at national borders, and no country can tackle them alone.
The UK will continue to test the most advanced models, build a rigorous scientific understanding of their capabilities and risks... and ensure policy decisions are grounded in the evidence.
Meanwhile, the European Commission told me this morning that OpenAI has granted ANISA access to its latest models, again, including GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 Cyber model.
