Know Your Worth: The Twilight Show with Mehmet Ali Zekay

Good evening, everyone.

Welcome to Teachers Talk Radio.

I'm Mehmet, your host for this evening.

I'm head of ma- in one of the Harrod Academy schools, and we have our guest here, Miss Taylor, Dr. Taylor actually, who is going to be talking to us about knowing your worth.

When you hear the phrase, "Know your worth," what does that mean to you personally as a teacher?

I think it's important to note that it doesn't actually mean demanding money from your head teacher.

It means understanding your school's pay policy and actually understanding your own value.

Oh, correct me if I'm wrong.

You're a doctor of physics, right?

I have a, I have a PhD in, in geophysics, but yes.

You have a PhD in geophysics, yeah.

Yeah.

So you, and you're, or you, as well as that, you're, you're a teacher, and-

Yeah

... how, how has the journey shaped the way you see your own professional value?

I think that professional value depends on the experience that you have.

So it's not just based on a qualification.

So the fact that I have a PhD does not make me a better teacher, but the experiences that I had during my PhD do.

So for example, I taught undergraduate students for two years.

I would, did a lot of demonstrating.

I did qualifications and, and teaching at higher education level.

Not only that, but I presented my work to big conferences, groups of about 100 people, all s- extreme subject experts.

Mm-hmm.

Um, and then I also had to work with different stakeholders, email them.

I had to work, I had to do field work and organize all that.
