Taipei Jiang Wan-an has apologized after a sugarcane given to him by a local temple was found discarded outside the temple, an episode that has become an instant flashpoint in the city's mayoral race.
At a banquet on September twenty-sixth marking the birthday of the earth god at a temple in Zhongshan District, both Jiang and his DPP rival Shen Bo-chang were presented with sugarcanes by the temple chairman.
The chairman publicly ribbed the incumbent, telling him that after he became, he stopped coming.
The chairman said the temple god had arranged it, explaining that Jiang's signified a blessing to keep climbing and run for president, while Shen's meant sweetness after bitterness.
After the banquet, Jiang's sugarcane was found abandoned near the temple and retrieved by staff, while Shen carried his home.
Jiang's office said he had handed the cane to a ward chief while making table rounds and forgot to retrieve it, and that he had phoned the chairman to apologize.
The ward chief said a volunteer had inadvertently left it behind and denied that it was tossed by the roadside.
