When something sets us off, the thinking brain goes offline, and the reaction takes over.

You might be noticing those racing thoughts that spiral downward, or you might be noticing what's in your body.

Not with the thought, but with a sensation, a tightness, a held breath, a drop in the stomach.

The feeling comes next, and then the story, which is the words we put to it.

Back when I was drinking, before I discovered this work, I would have believed every word.

Now, I know they're not the truth, and I can feel what's happening in my body before the story takes over.

And sometimes the part that we miss most is in the body, where it all starts.

When I asked you what your body was doing, that's a sense, and it has a name.

Your heartbeat, your breath, your tension, your temperature, the difference between hungry and full, between calm and on edge.

And just like with eyesight, some people have sharp interoception, and some people have blurry interoception.
