Your brain treats shame like real pain in the body. That sinking feeling, the urge to hide, the belief that you are broken: these are not character flaws. They are a coordinated nervous system event…

I want to begin by separating two things that get tangled together, shame and guilt.

They feel almost identical from the inside, but researchers have long treated them as different emotions, and the distinction goes like this.

Guilt is more often linked to what researchers call approach tendencies, wanting to repair, to apologize, to make it right.

Shame is more often linked to avoidance, wanting to hide, to withdraw, to disappear.

One way to think about it, shame is what happens when guilt has gone too far, past the point of useful friction into shutdown.

Remember, though, This is a tendency researchers observe, not a rule about you personally.

Shame's whole trick is to hide what it's attached to, whatever the behavior is, whatever the habit is, whatever the part of yourself you'd rather no one see.

Maybe for you it's drinking, and maybe some of it is already happening in silence behind a closed door.

I'm not going to pretend that loop is simple to step out of, but naming it is what lets a little light under the door.
