Who benefits most from AI: startups or big corporations? Colin C. Campbell and Michele Van Tilborg open that question to the Startup Club community in a candid discussion about money, data…
Colin C. CampbellHostMichele Van TilborgHostDaryl CabotGuestMangoGuestWilliamGuestPraveenGuestJLGuestHiramGuestSo what made me think of this topic was when I was reading the news this week, and I don't know who has seen this, but I'd really like people's thoughts on it is this really hit home hard for me is when I saw that Google in an auction purchased the now bankrupt Spirit Airlines, all their data.
It sounded like they bought behavioral data, like their data, and they bought it for a rather large sum of money.
They bought it for, it said this article that I saw, I think it was in Barron's for $10 million.
What's going on here? And it really is a mad, crazy race right now in the AI world.
And they have a lot of firepower behind them, brains and money and everything else.
They bought it because to really win this AI race in many ways, you really need access to data.
And that's why I started thinking like, wow, What's a little startup to do that doesn't have all this data? Or a big pocketbook to go out and participate in an auction.
OK, I know I'm taking a bit of an adversarial point of view here, but it really made me stop and think that is this the way it's going to be? I'm just putting that question out there that these folks that either have a lot of data already or can go out there and buy it.
How do startups survive in that? And do you even need like does your maybe your startup idea doesn't need data? So I just wanted this to be a bit of an open mic where people come up and just answer those questions.
Do we need a lot of data to win, quote, win in the AI race or do we not? And is this putting big corporations at an advantage over us? So I'd love for people to just raise their hand and get up on stage here.
And just for the record, I am a big believer in AI and I do think it will help startups, but I am a little bit concerned, like I said, on how some of us can get ahead here, get a leg up, give a boy a leg up, give a lady a leg up here against the corporations.
What is it that's going to help us win here? And I'm going to let Daryl talk.
I think I've talked enough and I really want everyone to come on stage that would like to add to this conversation.
