Bible Reading: 1 Kings 1

Good morning.

Welcome to Stand on the Word.

Thanks for joining me this morning.

I'm still on the road traveling, but I wanted to join you this morning as we take a short stop in the book of Kings.

Today we're looking at 1 Kings 1, verse 48.

Also the king said thus, "'Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne this day while my eyes see it.'" I want to welcome all of you who joined us in the journey through the book of Psalms.

This is a chronological Bible reading plan.

We kind of take the Bible as best as we can tell according to the events when they occurred.

So we're stopping for a couple of days here in 1 Kings to go back and pick up the culmination of David's reign, transitioning over to Solomon's.

So we're going to have 1 Kings chapters 1 and 2.

Then we're going to spend two days in the Song of Solomon.

Then we're going to move on to one of my favorite books of the Bible, and that is the book of Proverbs.

It's very helpful if you have the reading plan.

because, again, we pick up books as they occurred, as best as we can tell.

1 and 2 Kings originally was one book.

The Greek Septuagint divided it into two, and it covers a lot of the same events that we read about in Chronicles, but from a slightly different perspective, because the book of Kings was written by Jeremiah.

Its focus is more on the the political public affairs aspects of what was taking place during the various kings.

And it focuses a lot on the consequences of deviating from God's word and his direction.

CHRONICLES, WHICH COVERS MANY OF THE SAME EVENTS DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD, HAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FOCUS.

IT'S WRITTEN BY EZRA THE PRIEST, AND IT'S MORE ON THE SPIRITUAL STATE OF THE NATION, AND IT FOLLOWS PRIMARILY THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM AFTER THE DIVISION.

Now, the first two chapters of 1 Kings focus on the conclusion of David's reign in the beginning of Solomon's.

David is carried over from the book of Samuel into the book of Kings because David really becomes the benchmark for subsequent kings, as we will see as we read through this.
