Can't Set Up Camp on the Mountaintop

And I want to just stop here and point out how important it is that it happened on a mountain.

Because if you go all through the Bible, you will notice all kinds of big things that happen on mountains.

That Moses went up to the top of Mount Sinai to receive the law.

And he came down and his face was glowing.

sort of the parallel to what happens with Jesus here.

That Elijah had two mountaintop experiences.

He went to Mount Horeb when he was trying to escape from danger and he encountered the still, small voice of God.

And he went up to Mount Carmel where he defeated the He defeated the prophets of Baal up there.

King Solomon built the temple on Mount Moriah.

Jesus went up a mountainside to preach the Sermon on the Mount.

And if you have looked at your bulletin today and noticed that yellow sticky note, you'll see that scholars are kind of divided about which actual mountain the Transfiguration happened on.

But I think the point is not the actual mountain, but more the fact that it happened on a mountain that makes it important.

It's like pointing us to something.
