Could Bitcoin mining turn a major business expense into a tax-saving opportunity? In this episode, Mike Jesowshek and Colin from Leverage Mining explore how owning mining equipment could help…
You know, what is the taxpayer actually purchasing and operating? What is their role in it? What does that look like?
Yeah, so everything really changed last year when Donald Trump rolled out the Big Beautiful Bill.
And the Big Beautiful Bill brought back bonus depreciation in the sense that you could write off 100% of equipment in the first year that you purchase it.
So when I started the company back in 2022, it was at 100%.
But then that rule got phased down every single year.
So it went from 2022, 100%.
Then it went to 80% in 2023. and then 60% in 24%, and then all the way down to 40% in 25% before they overruled it.
And it was a bipartisan agreement to have indefinite bonus depreciation being 100%, which is incredible.
So mining really blew up as a tax strategy once again last year because...
What you can do is you can set up an LLC, right? You're setting up an active business and you are going to purchase your mining equipment, which qualifies for the bonus depreciation on this LLC.
And so therefore you're going to get tax write-offs for the equipment that you're purchasing and you can bonus depreciate it in year one.
which is great.
So if you have someone that has an AGI of a million dollars and they spend 300K on Bitcoin mining equipment, now they only owe on 700K.
So high net worth individuals love this because they have to spend a lot of money to the IRS.
They're going to have to pay them a lot.
Or they can get creative and start other businesses that are going to give them tax advantages and otherwise give them money back into their pocket over a longer period of time.
So that's why you see people do real estate, Bitcoin mining, buy cars over 6,000 pounds.
It's just another way to follow the tax rules and help yourself in the same time.
We do a lot in, you know, when we're talking to advanced type strategies in this, what I call an asset purchase opportunity.
And this is very well into that area where you're purchasing asset, using bonus depreciation to create a big offset in year one.
And then, you know, obviously earning income from that asset down the road as well.
