One of the things parents tell me again and again is that their child can do their maths at home, but not when it matters.

And then in class or in a test or the moment they're asked to explain their thinking out loud, all of that seems to disappear.

It can look like carelessness, or a lack of effort, or a child who just isn't concentrating well enough.

But there's something specific happening in those moments, and once you understand what it is, the pattern stops looking so odd.

I remember working with a boy of 10 whose teacher described him as inconsistent.

If we took our time, if I sat alongside him without any pressure, he could work through a method carefully, step by step.

But the moment anything changed, so if I asked him to go a little bit faster, or to explain his thinking while he worked, or if I added another step into the mix, things started to come apart.

A step missed here, a digit overlooked there, something slightly out of place.

That's an important picture to keep in mind because it wasn't that he didn't understand anything.

It was that what he understood hadn't yet become automatic enough to keep going when something extra was asked of him at the same time.

The same pattern shows up when a child suddenly can't recall a number fact they clearly know or freezes on which operation to use, not because they've forgotten it, but because pressure has gotten in the way of retrieving it in that moment.

A child might know their seven times table perfectly well when you ask them at the table after tea and go blank on the same fact in a timed test.

Or they might sit looking at a word problem capable of both the addition and the subtraction it could involve and simply not be able to work out which one the question is asking for.

Not because they don't know how to add or subtract, but because deciding which to use is itself another thing to manage under pressure.

What's actually happening when maths that works fine at home, whether it's a method, a fact, or knowing what to do, falls apart under pressure, and what you can do about it.
