Monday, 22nd of July, 2013, Furman-Fendlay Highway on the outskirts of Jonesville in Union County, South Carolina.
Yet another person drove up to Butch Parker's workshop, parked up, and got out of their vehicle.
This person was there for some mechanical work to be done on his car, and the reporting does differ on exactly who he was.
Sheriff David Taylor described him as a neighbor who had stopped by a number of times that day without getting an answer.
Either way, this man arrives, and as soon as he gets close enough to the house, to the workshop, he sees that the front door is standing open.
So deciding something is wrong, something just doesn't feel right, why is the door open? Why is no one around? Where is Butch on this literal Monday, start of the week? So he calls the Union County Sheriff's Office.
It's around 8:40 PM, and this deputy hears barking coming from inside the house.
Once the deputy is inside, he finds the most brutal and horrific scene he has ever seen.
Two people, a man and a woman, quickly identified as the people who live there, 59-year-old Butch and 51-year-old Gretchen, they are lying on the floor, and they aren't moving.
Emergency responders are called, but to be honest, the discovery of the bodies was only the beginning of the challenges that were facing them.
They had 18 dogs, they had several cats, and they had six chickens, and the dogs particularly were difficult to deal with.
As paramedics were attempting to reach the couple, the dogs were barking, they were growling, they were threatening to attack.
It basically made it impossible for emergency workers to safely examine the victims.
And so animal control officers were called to the property, and they did manage to remove the animals.
But now it had been well over an hour by the time emergency services were able to properly kind of get to the victims.
The investigation at the property continued throughout the night, and additional forensic teams were brought in to help process the scene.
In terms of the investigation, though, the sheriff did conduct a press conference, but basically said they didn't have a huge tum- amount to go on.
