Kingdom of God Series - The Seed and the Harvest

Jesus also said, the kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground.

Night and day, while he's asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows.

But he does not understand how it happens.

The earth produces the crops on its own.

First, a leaf blade pushes through.

Then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens.

And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.

This is the word of God for us today.

And the people said? Amen.

Great.

Well done.

What an image.

A farmer, a seed, a field, some growth.

and eventually a harvest, a very simple sounding story.

But actually in this story is a deep fundamental truth of what it is to be human and what it is to be with God.

It starts with the kingdom of God is like.

This is not working, so I'll just, I'll cue you for the clicks if that's okay.

The kingdom of God is like.

Now, I've been following Jesus for a long time.

I've been in ministry over half my life now, and I have this love-hate relationship as I read the teachings of Jesus in the parables.

Because as I have read the teachings of Jesus, as I've read the parables, I keep having to make friends with the fact that what Jesus is continually doing for me is as he talks about the kingdom, it is disrupting my expectations of the kingdom.

And it's disrupting my ideals of the kingdom.

And it's pulling down and deconstructing my version of the kingdom and replacing it with his version.

Because kingdom is a word that carries a certain sense of what we know that already means, right? Like kingdom.
