In this #europcr 2026 conversation, Andreas Baumbach speaks with Raj Makkar about one of the most rapidly evolving areas in structural heart interventions: TAVI for aortic regurgitation. While TAVI…
So I think what we see published from your experience there in this study in a trial is also reflected in our clinical practice.
And unless the patients had also lung disease, they all report an improvement in their symptoms.
So what happened here is our surgeons started to refer patients that they deemed high risk.
Do you think that is also what's happening worldwide and do the guidelines tell us something about that?
A few months ago, until the new guidelines came out, you know, when it came to TAVR and aortic regurgitation, it was actually Class III indication, right? The revised guidelines, because of the data that was generated in a line AR trial and a number of other registries, actually elevated this to 2B status, which means that TAVR may be actually reasonable.
The American guidelines have not yet been revised, so they're still stuck with Class III, but they're going to be revised soon, and hopefully... also go to the same recommendation as the European guidelines.
So I would say that yes, we are moving in the right direction and there is wider acceptance now in terms of TAVR as a possible treatment for patients who are at high risk for surgery.
