A Complete Curriculum On Justice

The ayah that I will be speaking about today is one hundred and thirty-five of Surat An-Nisa, the fourth surah in the Mushaf.

And I'll just take a few minutes to give you some context of what is happening in Surat An-Nisa and when it was given to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

This is early on in Medina, so the Muslims have established themselves in Medina, and the laws of Islam, uh, are now starting to be revealed.

So the dietary laws are being more detailed and family law especially having to do with marriage, divorce, inheritance, children's rights, et cetera, these kinds of things, they are now coming down, down in some detail and that is a big subject in Surat An-Nisa from the very beginning.

Another big subject is dealing with munafiqun, dealing with hypocrites, because the Muslim community is not one group, it's actually multiple groups.

There's a group of very strong believers.

There are groups of people that on the outside are believers, but on the inside are trying to sabotage Islam, but they wear the label of Muslim also.

They're within the ranks of the Muslims.

There are yet others who joined Islam sincerely, but after a while figured that this is too much.

They bit off more than they can chew.

They didn't really sign up for that much sacrifice or that much obedience or that much loyalty.

So they're having second thoughts about it, right? So the hy- the hypocrites are also subcategories.

One category is people whom qad dakhalu bil-kufr wa hum qad kharaju bihi.

They, they came in with the wrong reason and they're gonna eventually leave with the wrong reason.

So they were e- essentially spies anyway to begin with.

There are others who actually joined for good reason and then over time their intentions and their willpower wasn't strong enough to hold on to the faith, right? So it's some things about Islam sounded good to them, other things not so much.

They got on-- It was beyond their comfort zone.

They're also falling under the category of munafiqun in the Quran.

But then there's another population.

So, so far you've got two kinds of hypocrites.

You've got the true believers and then you've got this big population of Muslims in the middle who sometimes comes under the influence of the true believer and sometimes falls under the influence of some of the munafiqun and they're kind of wavering.

La ilaha ula wa la ilaha ula.

They're not here, they're not there.

And they sometimes have a high iman, sometimes they have a low iman.

They don't-- We don't qualify them and the Quran doesn't qualify them as true believers and it doesn't label them as hypocrites.
