Danuta IslerFuel prices in Poland set to fall after President signs windfall tax and Polish Defence Ministry prepares pre-war law.
Poland's Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański said on Thursday that fuel prices would fall at gas stations nationwide after President Karol Nawrocki signed government-backed law taxing windfall profits of fuel companies.
Domański said the government would issue the necessary regulations on Friday and estimated that pump prices could fall by about 1.5 Polish zloty per litre.
Starting this week and prices at gas stations in Poland will be lower, Domański wrote in a social media post.
Despite President Nawrocki's completely inexplicable resistance, fuel prices will remain lower for many, many weeks.
Towards the end of the year, we will make a decision regarding a potential extension of the period during which the lower VAT and excise duty rates apply.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk also welcomed Nawrocki's decision, saying it meant motorists will be paying less for fuel.
Nowrocki announced in a televised address on Thursday that he had signed the law but would refer it to the Constitutional Tribunal for a review of its constitutionality.
The president said he expected fuel prices to fall immediately and reach the levels promised by members of the governing coalition during the election
campaign.
I have signed the act regarding the windfall profits of fuel companies and I will put an end to the practice of holding Poles hostage to politics.
every zloty obtained thanks to this law must be spent on lowering fuel prices, Nawrowski added.
The law was published in Poland's official Journal of Laws on Thursday evening, allowing the government to proceed with implementing regulations.
The windfall tax is intended to help lower retail fuel prices, which have reached record levels amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The law applies to profits from the sale of liquid fuels earned between March 2026 and March 2027.
Nowrocki blocked an earlier version of the bill in August by referring it to the Constitutional Tribunal for a preventive review before it took effect.
Poland's defense ministry is working on a bill concerning full state readiness in the event of war, which would, among other things, allow the earlier movement of Polish and allied troops and improve the system for directing the country's defense.
Poland's deputy defence minister, Cezary Tomczyk, confirmed the work on Friday, saying the ministry had been preparing the legislation for several weeks.
Tomczyk described it as a pre-war law and said the work was being carried out so that a state of war would never occur.
He said the legislation concerns, among other things, the movement of Allied troops, purchases for the armed forces and addressing issues that had remained unresolved for years.
