Getting Started with AI in the MFL Classroom

Well, I'm very lucky.

I have a colleague who shares any new tools, any ideas that he has and shares that for the whole staff.

And ChatGPT was mentioned at the time.

And I got curious.

So as usual, I tried it immediately at home and I just saw the potential.

But I made a lot of mistakes to start with.

I asked, I think at the time, to write a text in French for my class and obviously did exactly what I asked and wrote a beautiful text and way too long and way too difficult.

And I had to rephrase, ask again, et cetera.

But I did see the potential straight away.

And I learned how to do a prompt, I suppose at the time.

Now, not so much because I think AI is much more forgiving.

But at the time, there was a lot of stuff about prompts.

And it kind of seemed like a science, but in fact, it's just being as precise as you can with what you ask.

So I learned, I don't think Chachi Pichi knows how to count, but if you ask for roughly a hundred words, you'll get roughly a hundred words.

And for me, the biggest change is when I realized that if I use the CEFR levels instead of saying fifth year, sixth year, senior cycle, I got really what I wanted.

So I went from write a text to write a hundred word A1 French text about school life with questions in English.

And you get what you want.

Usually, obviously, you have to adapt and ask her for more precision.

But if you have that type of level and roughly how many words you want, you get that.

So it's very forgiving.

Yeah, I think we agree on that.

I think AI is very forgiving and can be very pleasing.

It will always give you an answer no matter what.

It might not be the right answer sometimes or not straight away anyway.

But as you say, Dominique, you have the possibility to refine it.
