I guess our first starting point for many people, the question might even be why bother? Why do that hard work to try and build relationships between first and second peoples? And of course, by second peoples, we basically mean anyone who came much later, non-Indigenous peoples to Australia.
brother well uh we were batting this around before um starting up our interview and at least for me i was trying to narrow it down to maybe three reasons there might be others um the first reason is justice that is that we want as christians we believe all people ought to get their equal and proper due um We ought not to wrong each other, but we also ought not to fail to prevent someone being wronged if we can.
And I think as we've been hearing in this series so far, First Peoples of Australia have not been and are not being given their due.
Those past and ongoing wrongs shape the continent that we live on today and its social, economic and political structures.
And our benefit from those things draws us into responsibility because of that guilt we share in benefiting unfairly from those wrongs.
And I guess as Christian people, shalom doesn't exist, can't exist where there's no harmony between peoples.
And we seek shalom, like you're saying, your role, in some sense, your vocation is to be someone who makes and works for peace.
It's actually lovely to hear it from a non-Indigenous brother, you know, because I'm often trying to sell, trying to convince people that they want to do this.
And, you know, we talk about relationship and responsibility and It's hard if people don't see themselves as family with you.
If we are your brother and sister, then we're your family, and therefore if we're family, we're responsible for each other.
So where it comes to justice, that's because everything kind of got stuffed up.
if we bring it to its very basic foundation, the core beauty between us, we have relationship because we were given the gift of relationship, not because we chose each other, because we were birthed from the same creator to each other.
